JOB TITLE: Project Field Assistant
DUTY STATION: Trung Khanh, Cao Bang
RESPONSIBLE TO: Vietnam Country Programme Manager Cao Bang Project Coordinator
DURATION: One year from 1stMarch 2017 with possible extension
PURPOSE: To coordinate the Cao Vit Gibbon Conservation Project ensuring effective implementation in the field and supporting project development.
BACKGROUND
FFI’s mission is to conserve threatened species and ecosystems world-wide, choosing solutions that are sustainable, are based on sound science and take account of human needs.
FFI’s strategy to achieve this mission is to work with in-country organisations at all levels to support them in identifying and implementing country led sustainable solutions.
The strategic goal of the FFI Vietnam Primate Programme is to identify primate populations in most need of conservation interventions and provide strategic species-focused conservation in the field, based upon sound science and participation of local communities and other relevant stakeholders.
Currently the programme has established long-term primate-focused conservation projects at locations in northern Vietnam that maintain important populations of Critically Endangered primates: including the cao vit gibbon at Trung Khanh District in Cao Bang Province, the Tonkin snub-nosed monkey in Ha Giang Province, thewestern black crested gibbon in Mu Cang Chai District in Yen Bai Province and Muong La District in Son La Province, the Delacours langurs in Ha Nam Province, and the Cat Ba langur in Cat Ba island.
The eastern black crested gibbon is one of the rarest apes on the planet. Recent surveys carried out by FFI in Trung Khanh in 2016 have found about 124-136 cao vit gibbons left in this area. FFI is working across both sides of the China-Vietnam border to protect the cao vit gibbon. The main threat to the gibbons is habitat destruction. In 2007, through FFI support, Cao Bang Province in Vietnam established the Cao Vit Gibbon Conservation Area. FFI keeps continuing this progress by strengthening our Community-based Conservation Teams, which help government rangers in forest protection, biomonitoring, and enforcement activities, building conservation values within local communities by providing environmental education at three local middle schools, and working with local communities to improve livelihoods in 13 buffer zone communities.
